1939 India Silver 1/4 Rupee With Crowned Head Of King George Vi NGC Certified
Out of stock
Own a certified 1939 India 1/4 Rupee silver coin featuring King George VI, authenticated and slabbed by NGC. This beautifully struck piece marks a transitional moment in British India's numismatic and colonial history.
The obverse of the coin features the crowned bust of King George VI facing left, encircled by the inscription “GEORGE VI KING EMPEROR” — a title reflecting his role as ruler of both Britain and its vast imperial holdings, including India.
The reverse displays the denomination “1/4 RUPEE INDIA 1939”, rendered in both English and Urdu (روپیہ), surrounded by an ornate wreath composed of symbolic flora: the English rose, Scottish thistle, Irish shamrock, and Indian lotus — a delicate reminder of the unity and diversity under British dominion.
Importantly, 1939 was the final year Indian rupee coins were minted in 0.917 sterling silver. Beginning in 1940, the composition was debased to a 0.500 silver alloy, marking the end of an era of higher-purity coinage. This makes the 1939 issue especially desirable for collectors focused on both silver content and pre-war numismatics.
With its rich symbolism, high silver purity, and imperial associations, the 1939 1/4 Rupee is more than currency — it is a tangible artifact of India’s complex colonial past on the eve of World War II.
Certified by NGC and struck in sterling silver, this coin is an excellent addition to any collection of British Indian or world silver coinage.
