Judaea AE Prutah Of Antonius Felix (AD 52–59) NGC
Low stock: 2 left
This NGC-certified bronze prutah was struck during the prefecture of Antonius Felix, Roman governor of Judaea under Emperor Claudius from AD 52 to 59. A former slave who rose to power through imperial connections—his brother Pallas was a close advisor to the emperor—Felix governed Judaea with a mix of political calculation and personal ambition.
Felix is best known today for his involvement in one of the New Testament’s key episodes. Around AD 58, the Apostle Paul was arrested after a disturbance at the Jerusalem Temple and sent to Caesarea, where he was held under Felix’s authority. According to the Book of Acts, Felix frequently summoned Paul for discussions and reportedly enjoyed his company. However, Paul remained imprisoned for two years, likely due to his refusal to offer Felix a bribe—a common expectation in Roman administration at the time.
Felix’s governorship was marked by increasing unrest and heavy-handed repression of dissent. His rule was criticized by both Jewish and Roman historians for its corruption and cruelty, and he was ultimately recalled to Rome after being accused of excessive brutality.
This bronze prutah, struck during his time in office, offers a tangible link to one of the most politically charged and religiously significant periods in Judaean history. The coin typically features simple provincial designs, such as palm branches or wreaths.
Certified and encapsulated by NGC, this artifact holds special appeal for collectors of Biblical-era coinage, Roman provincial issues, and New Testament history.
