Arcadius was the elder son of Emperor Theodosius I and Aelia Flaccilla. Raised in luxury, Arcadius — like many imperial heirs — grew up isolated from hardship and was noted for his vanity and lack of strong leadership. When his father died in 395 AD, the empire was divided, and Arcadius became emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire, ruling from Constantinople.

As a young and inexperienced ruler, Arcadius was heavily influenced by court officials. Chief among them was Rufinus, a powerful and ambitious Roman officer, who manipulated the emperor and pursued his own interests. Rufinus' policies, including his dealings with the Gothic tribes along the Danube, led to fresh invasions of Greece, causing widespread destruction.

At the same time, Arcadius’ sister, Pulcheria, played a significant role in the religious life of the empire, helping to promote the growing cult of the Virgin Mary and shaping Eastern Orthodox Christianity’s future direction.

Arcadius died in 408 AD, leaving behind an Eastern Empire that, despite internal corruption and external threats, would ultimately survive and evolve into the Byzantine Empire.
