Flavius Arcadius was the elder son of Emperor Theodosius I and Aelia Flaccilla. Raised in luxury within the imperial court, Arcadius, like many children of emperors, was ill-prepared for the harsh realities of governance. His reign was largely characterized by weakness and the manipulation of powerful court officials and advisors who operated behind the scenes.

After the death of Theodosius I in 395 AD, the Roman Empire was permanently divided between East and West. Arcadius became emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire, ruling from Constantinople, while his younger brother Honorius governed the West. Although emperor in title, Arcadius exercised little real authority, with ministers, generals, and palace figures effectively controlling the empire’s administration.

Arcadius' reign saw internal strife, religious disputes, and increasing reliance on foreign mercenaries within the Roman armies — trends that would ultimately shape the Byzantine world that followed. He died in 408 AD, succeeded by his son Theodosius II.
