Arcadius Roman AE4 (AD 383-408) NGC
Low stock: 2 left
Own a certified Roman bronze AE4 of Arcadius (AD 383–408), authenticated and slabbed by NGC. This coin connects to the early Byzantine period, as the Roman Empire transitioned into two distinct halves.
Flavius Arcadius, the elder son of Emperor Theodosius I and Aelia Flaccilla, was born into imperial luxury. Like many children of powerful rulers, he grew up sheltered from the demands of leadership, and by the time he inherited the Eastern Roman Empire in 395 AD, he lacked the strength and decisiveness needed to govern effectively.
Arcadius’ reign was largely dominated by court officials and palace intrigue. Real authority often rested with powerful ministers and generals, as Arcadius remained a figurehead ruler. Despite this, his time as emperor saw important developments in the religious and political life of the Eastern Empire, including the firm establishment of Christianity and the gradual evolution of the Byzantine state.
Arcadius ruled from Constantinople until his death in 408 AD. His son, Theodosius II, succeeded him, continuing the Theodosian dynasty that would influence Eastern Roman politics for decades.
Bronze AE4 coins of Arcadius typically feature his small, diademed bust on the obverse, often with simplified or symbolic reverses celebrating imperial victories, divine favor, or military security — standard themes during a time of increasing internal and external pressures.
Certified by NGC, this AE4 coin offers collectors a glimpse into the early foundations of the Byzantine Empire and the final generations of the ancient Roman world.
