Aureolus was one of the so-called "Thirty Tyrants," a group of military leaders and usurpers who challenged imperial authority during Rome’s most unstable era. A skilled and efficient general, Aureolus served loyally under Emperor Gallienus, leading key campaigns to defend the empire’s borders. However, ambition led him to betray his benefactor.

In 268 AD, Aureolus rebelled against Gallienus and declared his allegiance to Postumus, ruler of the breakaway Gallic Empire. Issuing coins in Postumus' name, Aureolus sought to legitimize his authority over Italy. His revolt, however, was short-lived. After Gallienus was assassinated during the siege of Milan, Claudius II Gothicus assumed command. Aureolus was soon captured, and the Praetorian Guard — still furious over his betrayal — executed him without mercy.
