Own a certified Roman bronze AE of Claudius II Gothicus (AD 268–270), authenticated and slabbed by NGC. This coin represents the brief but vital reign of an emperor who helped restore Rome's fortunes after decades of crisis.
Claudius II rose to power in 268 AD during the chaotic aftermath of the Third Century Crisis. A capable military commander, he achieved fame by defeating invading Gothic armies, earning the honorific title Gothicus. His victories helped stabilize Rome’s northern frontiers and breathed new life into an empire battered by internal revolts and external invasions.
In an effort to build a stronger army, Claudius II reportedly issued a decree discouraging marriage among young men, believing unmarried soldiers would be more committed to military life. According to later Christian tradition, this policy set the stage for the story of St. Valentine, a priest who defied the emperor’s orders by performing secret marriages — an act that would later associate Claudius II’s era with the origins of Valentine's Day.
Claudius’ promising reign was cut short in 270 AD when he succumbed to a plague, possibly smallpox, before he could fully consolidate his successes.
Bronze AE coins of Claudius II typically feature his radiate-crowned portrait on the obverse, while the reverse often celebrates military victories, divine protection, or Roman stability.
Certified by NGC, this AE coin offers collectors a vivid link to a pivotal moment when military leadership and resilience temporarily pulled Rome back from the brink of collapse.
