Flavius Julius Constans was the fourth and youngest son of Constantine I and his second wife, Fausta. On Christmas Day 333 AD, at the tender age of 12, Constans was elevated to the rank of Caesar. Upon his father's death in 337 AD, the empire was divided among Constantine's sons, and Constans received the central portion, governing Italy, Illyricum, Macedonia, Achaea, and parts of North Africa.

As ruler, Constans initially proved capable, defending the Danube frontier and promoting Nicene Christianity against rising Arian influence. However, as he matured, his reign became increasingly unstable. Accusations of corruption, favoritism, and personal excess alienated many in the army and court. In 350 AD, the usurper Magnentius led a revolt, and Constans was forced to flee; he was ultimately captured and executed while trying to escape to Spain.
