This NGC-certified bronze AE3 coin was issued under Constantius I Chlorus, one of the founding figures of the Tetrarchy and father of Constantine the Great. Serving as Caesar of the Western Roman Empire from AD 293 and later as Augustus from 305 until his death in 306, Constantius played a key role in stabilizing the empire during a time of military and administrative reform.

Constantius earned his title “Chlorus,” meaning “the Pale,” due to his complexion, but he was anything but weak. As Western Caesar under the Tetrarchic system established by Diocletian, he was tasked with governing Gaul and Britain—regions plagued by rebellion and external threats. He famously defeated the usurper Carausius and his successor Allectus, reasserting imperial authority in Roman Britain.

When Diocletian and Maximian abdicated in 305, Constantius became senior Augustus in the West. Though his reign as Augustus was brief, his influence was monumental. Upon his death in 306 in Eboracum (modern-day York), his troops declared his son Constantine emperor—an event that would eventually reshape the entire Roman world.

The AE3 bronze denomination was commonly used during the late Roman period and often features a radiate or laureate bust on the obverse, with military or dynastic themes on the reverse.

Encapsulated and certified by NGC, this coin offers collectors a direct link to the foundations of the Tetrarchic system and the dawn of the Constantinian dynasty. It’s a historically rich piece ideal for collectors of late Roman or early imperial reform-era coinage.
