Domitian, the younger brother of Titus and son of Vespasian, rose to power after the death of his brother. His reign also saw military campaigns in Britain, where his general Agricola sought to conquer Caledonia (modern Scotland). He drastically curtailed their power, leading to widespread resentment among the Roman elite.

In 96 AD, Domitian was assassinated in a palace conspiracy. Following his death, the Senate condemned his memory to damnatio memoriae, attempting to erase him from official history — a rare and telling punishment.
