Geta was the younger son of Emperor Septimius Severus and brother to Caracalla. His father envisioned a stable succession through joint rule, elevating both sons as co-emperors during his lifetime. Rivalry between the brothers exploded into violence, and within months, Caracalla ordered Geta’s murder, reportedly in the arms of their mother, Julia Domna.

Following his death, Geta was subjected to a ruthless damnatio memoriae — the Roman practice of condemning a person’s memory. His name was erased from inscriptions, his portraits destroyed, and all public references to him systematically removed. Very few marble busts, paintings, or mosaics of Geta survive, making his coins some of the only authentic relics preserving his image.
