Aurelian Roman AE Antoninianus (AD 270-275) NGC – South Petherton Hoard
Out of stock
Own a certified Roman bronze AE Antoninianus of Aurelian (AD 270–275), authenticated and slabbed by NGC, and recovered from the remarkable South Petherton Hoard.
In the fall of 2013, novice treasure hunter George Hughes made an extraordinary discovery while metal detecting in the fields of South Petherton, England — a massive hoard of third-century Roman coins buried for over 1,700 years. Under British law, the British Museum examined, curated, and later released the coins, offering collectors a rare opportunity to own a piece of this historic find.
This coin was struck during the reign of Emperor Aurelian, one of Rome’s great military leaders and reformers. Aurelian is best known for reunifying a fractured empire after the devastating Crisis of the Third Century. He defeated the breakaway Gallic and Palmyrene Empires, earning the title Restitutor Orbis — "Restorer of the World." His reign also saw critical monetary reforms and the construction of the Aurelian Walls around Rome.
Bronze Antoninianii of Aurelian typically feature his radiate-crowned portrait on the obverse, while reverses celebrate military victories, the stability of the empire, or divine protection.
Certified by NGC and lovingly preserved from the South Petherton Hoard, this AE Antoninianus offers a rare opportunity to own a genuine piece of a legendary find — and a tangible link to an emperor who pulled Rome back from the brink of collapse.
