After the death of Constantine the Great in 337 AD, the empire was divided among his three sons. Constantine II received Britain, Gaul, and Spain but was dissatisfied with his share. Tensions with his younger brother Constans escalated into open conflict. In 340 AD, while attempting to invade Italy and seize greater control, Constantine II was ambushed and killed near Aquileia.
