Constantine II was the eldest son of Constantine the Great and his second wife, Fausta. Unlike his father, who fought for every inch of his authority, Constantine II was "born in the purple": he entered the world while his father already held the supreme title of Augustus. Raised in an environment of privilege and imperial expectation, Constantine II grew up confident — and some sources suggest, spoiled and entitled.

After Constantine the Great’s death in 337 AD, the empire was divided among his sons. Constantine II received Britain, Gaul, and Spain, but he soon grew dissatisfied with his share. Tensions with his younger brother Constans escalated into open conflict, and in 340 AD, during an ill-fated invasion of Italy, Constantine II was ambushed and killed in battle.
