Own a certified Roman AE coin commemorating Constantinopolis (AD 330–346), sourced from the historic Epfig Hoard and authenticated by NGC. This fascinating piece celebrates the founding of Constantinople, one of the greatest cities of the ancient and medieval worlds.

In 330 AD, Constantine the Great formally established a new capital on the site of Byzantium, renaming it "New Rome," though it quickly became known as Constantinople—the City of Constantine. A personification of the city, the deity Constantinopolis, was created to symbolize its protection and power.

The obverse of the coin features a helmeted, spear-carrying bust of Constantinopolis, dressed in military attire to reflect strength and stability. The reverse typically depicts Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory, inspired by the Greek goddess Nike. During Constantine’s reign and the empire’s gradual shift toward Christianity, images of Victoria began to evolve, influencing early Christian representations of guardian angels.

Coins like these were minted to promote the grandeur and permanence of the new capital, blending familiar Roman symbols with the changing religious identity of the empire. The Epfig Hoard, where this example was found, is a well-known archaeological discovery that preserved many coins from this transformative period.

Certified by NGC, this piece is a tangible link to the foundation of Constantinople and the evolving world of Late Antiquity. A meaningful addition for collectors of Roman coinage, early Christian history, or hoard discoveries.
