Galerius Roman AE (AD 293-311) NGC
Low stock: 1 left
Own a certified Roman bronze AE of Galerius (AD 293–311), authenticated and slabbed by NGC. This coin connects to the era of the Tetrarchy — Rome’s bold but short-lived experiment to restore order through shared imperial rule.
Galerius began his career as a soldier under the reigns of Aurelian and Probus, rising through the ranks due to his military skill and leadership. In 293 AD, Emperor Diocletian selected Galerius as Caesar, entrusting him with the defense and administration of the Danube frontier. Twelve years later, Galerius was elevated to the rank of Augustus, further solidifying his power during a period when the Roman Empire was divided into more manageable regions under the Tetrarchic system.
Galerius played a key role in several major conflicts, particularly against the Sassanid Persians, achieving important victories that secured Rome’s eastern territories. However, he is also remembered for continuing and intensifying the Great Persecution of Christians, a campaign started under Diocletian that sought to restore traditional Roman religious practices.
Galerius ruled until his death in 311 AD, and shortly before he died, he issued the Edict of Serdica, officially ending the persecution of Christians and allowing freedom of worship — a major turning point in Roman religious history.
Bronze AE coins of Galerius typically feature his laureate or helmeted bust on the obverse, while reverses emphasize military victories, Roman unity, and divine favor.
Certified by NGC, this AE coin offers collectors a connection to the powerful generals who fought to hold the empire together during one of its most transformative eras.
