The son of Emperor Valentinian I and the nephew of Emperor Valens, Gratian was born into imperial power and assumed leadership at a young age, initially as co-emperor with his father and later as sole ruler of the West.

Gratian’s early reign was marked by vigor and promise. He gained respect as a capable military leader and was praised for his personal bravery and commitment to defending the empire’s borders.
