Roman Bronze AE Of Helena (AD 324–337) Epfig Hoard NGC
Out of stock
This NGC-certified Roman bronze AE coin was struck for Helena, mother of Constantine the Great and one of the most venerated women in Roman imperial history. The coin originates from the famed Epfig Hoard—a well-known archaeological find of late Roman bronze coins in France—adding an extra layer of historical value.
Helena was the consort of Constantius Chlorus and rose to prominence when her son Constantine became sole ruler of the Roman Empire in AD 324. Soon after, Constantine sent Helena on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, where her name would become forever linked with Christian tradition.
According to early Christian sources, Helena undertook an ambitious search for holy relics in Jerusalem. Her most celebrated discovery was the True Cross—believed to be the very cross upon which Jesus Christ was crucified. In honor of this profound find, Helena commissioned the construction of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, which remains one of Christianity’s most sacred sites to this day.
Coins of Helena often depict her with a draped imperial bust and reverses celebrating Pietas (piety) or imperial virtue. These issues helped affirm her honored role in Constantine’s regime and among the Christian faithful.
Certified and encapsulated by NGC, and sourced from the Epfig Hoard, this coin is both a numismatic and spiritual artifact—connecting the legacy of a Roman empress with one of the foundational moments of Christian history. It is a meaningful addition for collectors of Roman women, early Christianity, or hoard-provenanced coins.
