Magnentius was a powerful military commander stationed in Gaul who rose against the unpopular rule of Constans, Constantine the Great’s youngest son. In 350 AD, Magnentius declared himself emperor, quickly gaining widespread support in Britain, Gaul, and Hispania. His broad base of backing stemmed in part from his moderate religious policies: unlike Constantius II, who favored Arian Christianity, Magnentius showed tolerance toward both traditional pagan practices and Catholic Christians.

Despite his initial success, Magnentius struggled to expand his control eastward. His attempts to invade Constantius II’s territories failed, and in 353 AD he was decisively defeated at the Battle of Mons Seleucus in southern Gaul. Facing inevitable capture, Magnentius took his own life. In the aftermath, Constantius II ordered brutal reprisals against Magnentius' former supporters, further destabilizing the western provinces.
