Maximian Roman AE (AD 286-310) NGC
Low stock: 2 left
Own a certified Roman bronze AE coin of Maximian (AD 286–310), authenticated and slabbed by NGC. This piece connects directly to the early days of the Tetrarchy — a system that brought temporary stability to a fractured Roman Empire.
Maximian, a seasoned soldier and trusted ally of Emperor Diocletian, was appointed as co-emperor to rule the western provinces while Diocletian governed the East. Known for his toughness and military skill, Maximian successfully led campaigns against the Goths, Germanic tribes, and internal usurpers, helping to secure Rome’s vulnerable frontiers.
As Augustus of the West, Maximian played a crucial role in strengthening imperial defenses and restoring authority during a time of near-constant threats. Though fiercely loyal to Diocletian, Maximian’s later years were marked by complex political maneuvering as the original Tetrarchic order began to crumble. After a brief abdication in 305 AD, Maximian returned to political life, ultimately dying in 310 under mysterious circumstances after a failed revolt against Constantine the Great.
Bronze coins of Maximian often feature his laureate or helmeted portrait on the obverse, symbolizing imperial power, while the reverses typically celebrate military victories, Roman virtues, or the unity of the Tetrarchy.
Certified by NGC, this bronze AE coin offers a direct link to a critical figure in one of Rome’s most ambitious political experiments. A must-have for collectors interested in the Tetrarchy, Roman military leadership, or the transitional period between the Crisis of the Third Century and the age of Constantine.
