Maximian Roman AE (AD 286-310) NGC
Low stock: 2 left
Own a certified Roman bronze AE of Maximian (AD 286–310), authenticated and slabbed by NGC. This coin offers a direct link to one of the foundational figures of the Tetrarchy — Rome’s great effort to restore stability after decades of crisis.
Maximian, a seasoned general of humble origins, was handpicked by Diocletian to serve as co-Emperor in the West while Diocletian governed the East. Together, they established the Tetrarchy, a system of joint rule designed to ensure smoother transitions of power and better management of the empire’s vast territories.
As Augustus of the West, Maximian proved himself a capable and determined leader. He fought major campaigns against the Germanic tribes, particularly the Goths, securing Rome’s vulnerable northern borders and reinforcing imperial control in Gaul and Britain. His military efforts were critical to strengthening Rome’s position during a time when the empire was still reeling from internal strife and external threats.
Maximian abdicated alongside Diocletian in 305 AD, but he later attempted to reclaim power during the civil wars that followed. His final rebellion against Constantine the Great ended in defeat and his death in 310 AD.
Bronze AE coins of Maximian typically feature his laurel-wreathed or helmeted bust on the obverse, while reverses often celebrate military strength, victories, or the unity of the empire.
Certified by NGC, this AE coin offers collectors a tangible piece of the Roman Empire’s determined efforts to survive and rebuild during one of its most challenging centuries.
