Maximinus II Roman AE (AD 311-313) NGC – London Mint
Out of stock
Own a certified Roman bronze AE of Maximinus II (AD 311–313), struck at the London Mint and authenticated by NGC. This coin comes from the final, violent years of the Tetrarchy — a system intended to bring order but instead plunged Rome into civil war.
Maximinus II was the nephew of Emperor Galerius and rose quickly through the ranks, becoming Caesar in 305 AD and then Augustus six years later. Despite his powerful backing and military experience, his rule coincided with an era of brutal rivalries as the Tetrarchic structure collapsed into personal ambition and open warfare.
A staunch supporter of traditional Roman paganism, Maximinus II oversaw one of the last systematic persecutions of Christians in the empire. However, he ultimately could not withstand the military and political alliances formed against him. After his defeat by Licinius I, he committed suicide in 313 AD — another casualty of Rome’s brutal struggles for supremacy.
Bronze AE coins of Maximinus II typically feature his stern, laurel-crowned portrait on the obverse, while reverses often promote imperial victories, divine favor, or military strength — a striking contrast to the chaos and bloodshed of the period.
Certified by NGC and minted in London, this AE coin is a powerful artifact from the twilight of the Tetrarchy and the closing days of widespread pagan dominance. A key addition for collectors focused on late Roman history, civil wars, or the epic battles between Rome’s last polytheist rulers.
