Tetricus II Roman AE (AD 273-274) Graded
Low stock: 2 left
Add a fascinating piece of Roman history to your collection with this AE coin of Tetricus II (AD 273–274), certified and slabbed by NGC. Tetricus II served as Caesar of the short-lived Gallic Empire, a breakaway state that controlled parts of Gaul, Britain, and Hispania during the turbulent Crisis of the Third Century.
Following the assassination of Postumus in 269 AD, the Gallic Empire quickly unraveled. Victorinus assumed leadership but was soon murdered under scandalous circumstances. His mother, Victoria, played a key role in stabilizing the situation by promoting Tetricus I to Augustus. Tetricus II, his son, was then elevated as Caesar, a title designating him heir to the imperial throne.
However, the Gallic Empire's decline was inevitable. In 274, after defections among their own forces, Tetricus I and II surrendered to the Roman Emperor Aurelian. Both were paraded as captives in Aurelian’s grand triumph in Rome but were spared execution — a rare act of clemency in Roman politics.
Coins of Tetricus II are prized for their historical significance and for the glimpse they offer into this chaotic period. Typical designs feature a youthful portrait of Tetricus II on the obverse, with reverse imagery promoting Roman military strength or stability.
Authenticated by NGC, this coin is a certified relic from one of Rome’s most unstable yet fascinating eras — an ideal addition for any collector interested in the Crisis of the Third Century or the fall of the Gallic Empire.
