Born in Spain around 346 AD, Theodosius rose to prominence as a military commander under Emperor Gratian. In 379 AD, after the catastrophic Roman defeat at the Battle of Adrianople, Gratian selected Theodosius to assume command of the Eastern Empire. His leadership brought much-needed stability to a realm battered by Gothic invasions and internal upheaval.

Theodosius spent the early years of his reign securing the eastern provinces and negotiating delicate treaties with various barbarian groups. In 392 AD, after the death of his brother-in-law Valentinian II, Theodosius assumed control of the Western Empire as well, becoming the last ruler to govern a unified Roman Empire.

His reign also marked a major shift in religious policy. A staunch supporter of Nicene Christianity, Theodosius issued edicts that suppressed pagan practices and established Christianity as the empire’s dominant faith, shaping the religious future of Europe for centuries.
