Theodosius II Roman AE (AD 402-450) NGC
Low stock: 2 left
Own a certified Roman bronze AE of Theodosius II (AD 402–450), authenticated and slabbed by NGC. This coin connects to the long and relatively stable reign of an emperor who shaped the late Roman world in law, education, and defense.
Theodosius II, the son of Emperor Arcadius, ascended the throne as a child and initially ruled under the regency of his formidable sister, Pulcheria. Known as "Theodosius the Calligrapher" for his devotion to learning, he oversaw one of the most important legal projects in Roman history — the creation of the Codex Theodosianus. This codification gathered centuries of Roman law into a single, organized system that would influence both Byzantine and medieval European legal traditions.
Beyond his contributions to law, Theodosius founded the University of Constantinople, one of the earliest formal institutions of higher learning in the ancient world. He also ordered the construction of the Theodosian Walls, massive fortifications that protected Constantinople’s western flank for centuries, helping the city withstand numerous sieges.
Theodosius died in 450 AD from injuries sustained in a riding accident. His sister Pulcheria and her husband Marcian succeeded him, ensuring the dynasty's continued influence.
Bronze AE coins of Theodosius II often feature his diademed, draped bust on the obverse, while reverses commonly celebrate imperial victory, divine favor, or stability.
Certified by NGC, this AE coin offers collectors a direct link to one of the last great Roman emperors of antiquity — a builder, a scholar, and a preserver of empire.
