Following the murder of Postumus in 269 AD — the charismatic founder of the Gallic Empire — the region rapidly descended into instability. Victorinus, who succeeded Postumus, was himself assassinated by an officer whose wife he had seduced. In the aftermath, Victorinus' mother, Victoria, emerged as a powerful figure, using her influence and wealth to install Tetricus I, a respected general and aristocrat, as emperor.

Although Tetricus I attempted to stabilize the Gallic Empire, he faced constant internal dissent and external threats. His authority eroded as rebellious generals and crumbling loyalties undermined his rule. In 274 AD, recognizing the futility of continued resistance, Tetricus surrendered to the Roman emperor Aurelian, who had set out to reunite the empire. Remarkably, Aurelian spared Tetricus, offering him a position in the Roman administration — a rare mercy in Roman politics.
