Born in Spain around 346 AD, Theodosius rose to prominence as a skilled general during a time of grave military crisis. Selected by Emperor Gratian to assume command of the Roman armies after the catastrophic defeat at Adrianople, Theodosius was elevated to Eastern Emperor in 379 AD. He spent the early years of his reign fortifying the eastern provinces and managing delicate negotiations with the Gothic tribes.

In 392 AD, following the death of his brother-in-law Valentinian II, Theodosius assumed control over the Western Empire as well, briefly reuniting the empire under a single ruler for the final time in Roman history. His reign ushered in significant religious transformation, as Theodosius became a staunch promoter of Nicene Christianity and issued edicts that marginalized pagan worship throughout the empire.

Theodosius’ death in 395 AD permanently divided the empire into East and West, setting the stage for the eventual fall of the Western Empire and the continued endurance of the Eastern, or Byzantine, Empire.
