Roman Bronze AE3 Of Fausta (AD 307–326) NGC
Low stock: 2 left
This NGC-certified bronze AE3 coin was struck for Fausta, the second wife of Emperor Constantine I and a prominent figure in the Constantinian dynasty. Married to Constantine around AD 307 as part of a political alliance with her father, the retired emperor Maximian, Fausta held the title of Augusta and played a key role in the imperial family for nearly two decades.
As empress, Fausta was the mother of several future emperors, including Constantine II, Constantius II, and Constans, helping to secure the dynastic succession of one of Rome’s most influential ruling houses. Coins bearing her name and likeness reflect her high status at court and were likely struck to reinforce the image of imperial unity and stability during a time of continued transformation in the Roman Empire.
Fausta's story, however, ended in controversy. In AD 326, she was executed under mysterious circumstances—possibly due to her involvement in court intrigue or conflict with Constantine’s son from a previous marriage, Crispus, who was also executed the same year. The true reasons remain unknown, and historians continue to debate whether Fausta was the victim or the instigator of a tragic imperial scandal.
This AE3 bronze coin typically features her diademed bust on the obverse and may include reverses honoring her role as Augusta or emphasizing dynastic themes.
Encapsulated and authenticated by NGC, this coin offers collectors a compelling glimpse into the political complexities and family dynamics of the Constantinian era—a must-have for those focused on imperial women or fourth-century Roman history.
