Roman Silver Denarius Of Julia Mamaea (Died AD 235) NGC
Low stock: 2 left
This NGC-certified Roman silver denarius was issued for Julia Mamaea, mother of Emperor Alexander Severus and one of the most influential women of the Severan dynasty. As regent during her son's minority, Julia effectively governed the empire, wielding real political power even after Alexander came of age.
Known for her intellect, piety, and ambition, Julia Mamaea surrounded her son with capable advisors and tried to instill in him a sense of responsibility and restraint. However, her influence was not always welcomed—particularly by the military. Her close control over imperial decisions and the perception that Alexander was too heavily influenced by his mother led to growing discontent among the army.
In AD 235, during a campaign against Germanic tribes along the Rhine, the legions became disillusioned with Alexander’s leadership and proclaimed the general Maximinus Thrax as emperor. When soldiers stormed Alexander’s tent, they found him clinging to his mother. Both were executed on the spot—an event that marked not only the brutal end of Julia Mamaea’s life but also the fall of the Severan dynasty.
The silver denarius, with its refined engraving and detailed portraiture, stands as a testament to Julia Mamaea’s prominence. These coins often feature her imperial bust and inscriptions affirming her authority and status within the imperial family.
Encapsulated and certified by NGC, this coin is a striking artifact from a moment of profound change in Roman imperial history, ideal for collectors of imperial women, the Severan dynasty, or third-century Roman silver.
