Roman Ar Antoninianus Of Trebonianus Gallus (Ad 251-253) NGC.
Low stock: 2 left
This NGC-certified Roman AR (silver) Antoninianus was struck under Saloninus, a short-lived but historically significant figure during one of Rome’s most turbulent eras—the Crisis of the Third Century. The coin dates to around AD 258, a period marked by civil war, economic collapse, foreign invasion, and a rapid turnover of emperors.
Saloninus was the son of Emperor Gallienus and grandson of the famed military leader Valerian. Appointed Caesar (junior emperor) in Gaul, Saloninus was based in Cologne, where he was tasked with overseeing the western provinces. Though young and inexperienced, his appointment was a political move meant to secure loyalty in a crumbling empire. His rule, however, was cut short by internal dissent. Postumus, a powerful general stationed in the region, rebelled and had Saloninus executed after a brief siege—effectively eliminating the teenager and founding the breakaway Gallic Empire.
The antoninianus was the dominant silver coin of the mid-third century, typically struck with debased silver and used widely across the empire. Despite their small size and fluctuating metal content, these coins played a vital role in everyday commerce and military payments.
This certified specimen offers collectors a tangible piece of Rome’s most chaotic period. The coin’s imagery, often featuring Saloninus in imperial attire, is a rare link to a young ruler who briefly held power amid Rome’s near-collapse. For students of Roman history or enthusiasts of the Crisis era, this silver antoninianus is a fascinating and scarce addition.
