Roman Silver Antoninianus Of Valerian II (AD 253–257) NGC
Low stock: 2 left
This NGC-certified silver Antoninianus was struck for Valerian II, the son of Emperor Gallienus, during one of the most turbulent periods in Roman history—the Crisis of the Third Century. This era, spanning from AD 235 to 284, was marked by near-constant civil war, economic instability, and the fragmentation of imperial authority, with more than two dozen emperors and usurpers vying for power.
Valerian II was appointed Caesar around AD 253 as part of a dynastic strategy by his grandfather, Emperor Valerian I, and his father, Gallienus. Although still a young boy, Valerian II was sent to the Danubian frontier as a nominal commander, likely under the supervision of powerful generals. His position was largely symbolic, meant to solidify loyalty among the legions in the provinces.
Tragically, Valerian II died just a few years later, around AD 257, under suspicious circumstances. While the exact details remain lost to history, it is widely believed he was murdered—possibly by military officials who resented the ruling dynasty or sought to elevate their own candidates for power.
The silver Antoninianus bearing his name is a rare and poignant artifact of this chaotic time. Typically featuring a youthful portrait of the prince with a radiate crown, the coin often carries reverses symbolizing hope, stability, or divine favor—ironically contrasted with his untimely death.
Certified and encapsulated by NGC, this coin is a compelling piece for collectors focused on imperial dynasties, child emperors, or the instability that defined the mid-third-century Roman world.
