Own a certified Roman Silver Antoninianus of Philip I (AD 244–249), authenticated and slabbed by NGC. This coin comes from a critical period during the mid-third century, as Rome struggled to maintain stability amid growing internal and external pressures.

Known as Philip the Arab, he rose to power following the death of Emperor Gordian III during a campaign in the East. To secure his dynasty, Philip I elevated his young son Philip II to the rank of co-Caesar, hoping to ensure a smooth succession and strengthen his political position.

Philip’s reign was marked by significant events, including the celebration of Rome’s Millennium — its 1,000th anniversary — in 248 AD, an extravagant festival meant to renew Roman pride and unity. However, despite these efforts, Philip faced continuous challenges from rebellious generals and foreign invaders along the empire’s borders. His inability to fully stabilize the situation led to his downfall, as he was defeated and killed by Trajan Decius in 249 AD.

Silver Antoninianii of Philip I typically feature his radiate-crowned portrait on the obverse, symbolizing imperial authority, while the reverse celebrates Rome’s virtues, victories, or the Millennium festivities.

Certified by NGC, this Silver Antoninianus offers a tangible piece of Rome’s complex and fragile mid-third-century history. A great addition for collectors focused on the Crisis of the Third Century, Roman military emperors, or coins tied to major imperial celebrations.
